THE THREAT OF ANIMAL ACTIVISM

The Threat of Animal Activism

The humane and responsible use of animals in medical and scientific research has the overwhelming support of scientists. Here are what opponents to animal research – none of them scientists – have to say.

Animal research has played a vital role in virtually every major medical advance of the last century – for both human and animal health. A study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services concluded that animal research has helped increase our life expectancy by 23.5 years.

Despite the overwhelming support animal research has from scientists and health and government organizations, animal activists continue to deny that animal research saves lives. They repeat myths (pdf) about animal research such as the pet theft myth. They misrepresent historical developments. And some of them vandalize laboratories and harass and threaten scientists.

Animal Welfare vs. Animal Rights
A common myth is that all animal lovers are supporters of animal rights. This belief, however, is based on a misunderstanding of the difference between animal welfare and animal rights.

Animal Rights Quotes
Animal rights activists believe that animals should have the same rights as people. As one activist put it, "The life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration." Read more about what animal rights activists have said about animal research and our relationship to animals.

Violent and Illegal Activity by Animal Activists
Although animal activists portray themselves as kind and compassionate, the animal rights movement sponsors and perpetrates illegal and violent activity – and these criminal acts are escalating in frequency and destructiveness. Read media reports of violent and illegal activities by animal activists and FBR's Illegal Incident Report, a record of all known criminal activities committed since 1981 in the name of "animal rights."

Bleeding Hearts, Broken Promises
There is a clear contradiction shared by many celebrities that threatens the future discovery of treatments and cures for human diseases. It is the misguided belief that celebrities who publicly support the fight to cure life-threatening affliction, such as AIDS and breast cancer, can – at the same time – support groups within the animal rights movement that fundamentally oppose the use of animals for medical research.
