Dr. DeBakey, chairman of the board of the Foundation for Biomedical Research, is this country’s most honored physician. He is a recipient of the prestigious Lasker Award for Research, the AMA Distinguished Service Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction, the National Medal of Science, the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award, and the United Nations’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. DeBakey has been inducted into the Health Care Hall of Fame and named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress. NASA has honored Dr. DeBakey with the Commercial Invention of the Year Award. He is a recipient of the Gold Hippocrates International Award and has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Much of Dr. DeBakey’s success can be directly attributed to his work with the animal model. |

The Award
The Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards, named in honor of FBR's
chairman, recognize outstanding investigative or interpretive reporting
that enhances public understanding and support for medical and scientific
discovery involving the humane use of animal models. The competition
is open to all professional journalists.

Deadlines
Entries must have been published, broadcast or posted on-line between
March 31, 2007, and March 31, 2008. They must be postmarked
or received by April 30, 2008.
Award Presentation
The 2007-2008 Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards will be presented in Washington, D.C. on June 23, 2008. The winner of each category will receive $2,000 plus travel expenses. In the event of multiple bylines or producers, the prize will be divided equally and travel expenses will be paid for up to two winners. Entrants agree to make every possible effort to attend the awards ceremony. The judges may also designate “honorable mention” awards, which confer an award of $1,000. Five hard copies of each entry are required. TV entries must be submitted on VHS or DVD; radio entries on cassette tape or CD. Entries cannot be returned. |
