About Survivors
Survivors is a new public education campaign, developed
to promote public respect and appreciation for the vital
role that biomedical research plays in advancing veterinary
medicine. The goal of this innovative project is to strengthen
public understanding and support for America’s medical
research community.
A research study, recently conducted for the Foundation
for Biomedical Research, tested a number of different
messages to determine which was most likely to increase
public support for research involving animals. The results
showed that people who oppose biomedical research with animals
are most likely to alter their opinion when informed that
animals, as well as humans, benefit from the discoveries
that are made.
Designed with these data in mind, Survivors features portrait
photography of four companion animals— Buddy, Pookie,
Lucy and Maggie. These cats and dogs represent the millions
of pets in America today that can live longer, healthier
and happier lives thanks to advances in veterinary medicine
made possible through animal research.
Campaign materials include brochures and posters, suitable
for display in veterinary offices, vet appointment reminder
cards, shopping mall displays, TV and Radio PSAs and a Video
News Release.
The official spokesperson for Survivors is Theresa
Fossum, DVM, PhD, Professor of Surgery, College of Veterinary
Medicine at Texas A&M University.
