This Joint Problem Makes Dogs, Owners, Weak In the Knees
Wall Street Journal, April 11, 2006 - Being an athlete is a well-known risk factor for cruciate-ligament injury. A larger — but lesser-known — risk factor is being a dog. The number of dog knees undergoing cruciate-ligament repair each year in America is estimated to now exceed 1.2 million. That's about five times the number of human procedures—even though humans outnumber dogs in the U.S. by nearly five to one.

April 14, 2004 – Thirty-six billboards promoting the use of animals in medical research have been posted in Bakersfield, KERO reported. They feature "Buddy," the dog who is alive because of a procedure developed through animal research. Read More.

January 6, 2004 – The Foundation for Biomedical Research is proud to announce that our TV PSA “A New Leash on Life,” has been awarded a Certificate of Merit at the 2003 Aesculapius Awards by the Health Improvement Institute. These awards of excellence are presented to producers of health-related radio and television PSAs and Web sites that the HII judges consider excellent in communicating health information to the public. July 1, 2003 – The AVMA Executive Board approved sending a letter to the Foundation for Biomedical Research supporting its "Survivors" public education campaign promoting the role that biomedical research plays in advancing animal health. The Council on Research recommended that the AVMA support "Survivors," which the council called "highly commendable and eagerly awaited by the veterinary medical research community." Read more.

April 1, 2003 – The Foundation for Biomedical Research has launched a public education campaign to promote the role research plays in advancing animal health. The campaign, dubbed Survivors, will feature radio and television public service announcements, video news releases, shopping mall exhibits, posters and pamphlets. Read more.

March 21, 2003 – The "Survivors" campaign, a public education effort by the Foundation for Biomedical Research, is drawing fire from animal welfare groups that label it misleading and manipulative. Fearing reprisals, a handful of malls around the country, including one in Santa Rosa, have refused the advertisements. Most, including the Galleria in Roseville, have welcomed them, the organization's president said, though the Roseville mall pulled the displays this week without explanation. Read more.
